Who is God to me: A quiet reflection while sitting still

This is not a sermon and it is not a script. It is a simple, honest reflection on who God is to me, and how I would describe God, offered for men who are tired of religious performances but not yet ready to give up on God. If that is where you are, you are not alone.

Who Is God To Me, Really?

An honest reflection beyond church performance and religious pressure

Who God Is to Me When the Noise Fades

When I strip away the church language, the expectations, and the pressure to “sound spiritual,” I notice something simple: God keeps showing up in the quiet places of my life. Not in the big performances, but in the moments when I am tired, honest, and out of slick answers. That is where I meet God most clearly.

To me, God is the steady presence underneath the chaos. When work is loud, family is complicated, and my own thoughts are running in circles, there is still a low, quiet sense that I am not alone. I do not always feel it strongly. Sometimes it is barely there. But when I slow down enough to pay attention, I notice a kind of inner companionship that does not shame me, does not rush me, and does not demand a performance. I have come to call that presence God.

God also meets me in my questions. I used to think doubt meant I was failing spiritually. Now I see doubt as a doorway. The questions that keep me up at night — about suffering, injustice, identity, purpose — have slowly become invitations to talk to God, not reasons to walk away. God, to me, is the One who can handle the questions I am scared to say out loud in church.

💡 Gentle Thought: If you only talk to God in polished, church-approved language, you may never discover how God responds to the real you.

How I Would Describe God, Without the Religious Filter

If you asked me to describe God in a sentence, I would say this: God is a loving, unhurried Presence who knows me fully and still chooses to stay. Not a distant CEO, not a scorekeeper, not a spiritual drill sergeant. A Presence. Close enough to feel, patient enough to wait, strong enough to hold what I cannot carry by myself.

I experience God as deeply personal but never controlling. God does not bully me into decisions, but quietly invites me toward wholeness. When I am tempted to measure my worth only by my title, my income, or my grind, God is the voice that reminds me I am more than what I produce. When I mess up, God is not the cold stare across the table; God is the open seat next to me saying, “Let us look at this together.”

I also describe God as spacious. That may sound strange, but here is what I mean: with God, I do not feel squeezed into a religious mold. There is room for my anger, my confusion, my joy, my ambition, my exhaustion. There is room to be a man navigating nursing life, family expectations, and the weight of society — without pretending any of that does not affect my faith. God is not threatened by my reality; God meets me inside it.

Honest reflection often becomes the doorway to a more authentic experience of God.

Walking This Out with Others at ADONI

At ADONI Spiritual Formation Center, this is the kind of conversation we make room for — especially with professionally accomplished Black men who are done pretending but not done with God. We are not trying to pull you back into religious performance. We are creating a serious, safe space to ask who God really is to you, and how you actually experience God in your real life, not just on Sundays.

Whether it is through the year-long Walk the Rhythm 1:1 journey, spiritual direction, or formation cohorts, the goal is simple: help you notice and trust the God who is already walking with you — without shame, without pressure, and without a script you have to perform. If this reflection resonates with where you are, it may be time to take the next gentle step.

📌 Invitation: Begin your formation. Apply for Walk the Rhythm, request a conversation with Robb, or join the ADONI Formation Community. You do not have to sort out who God is to you on your own.
